Fertilizers For Subtropical Fruits

Avocado, Citrus, Figs, Guavas, and several other subtropicals including Palms consume a large amount of Nitrogen, a small amount of Phosphorus, and a moderate amount of Potash each year when producing significant growth. The annual feeding rate per tree for commercial production is 1 lb (net) of Nitrogen and 2/3 lb of Potash. If significant Phosphorus is present in the soil (as in many clay soils), then any added Phosphorus is ignored and unfortunately washed into waterways. Otherwise, 0.1 to 1/3 lb Phosphorus should be added per tree each year. If you are unsure about your soil, then obtain a soil test kit from your county farm extension office or an independent nursery.

In terms of N-P-K, the ratio 3:1:2 is a good guide. For example, fertilizers rated 28-8-18 and 15-5-10 both have a 3:1:2 ratio.

In the metropolitan areas of San Diego, feed your subtropicals February through November, skipping Dec. and Jan. when growth is at a minimum. In cooler areas where Citrus is grown, feed March through October. Be sure to water a small amount once per week during winter if it does not rain.
